A Crash Course In Audio Fundamentals by You Hear That?

Project Summary.

This app serves as an introductory crash course on sound waves for someone who is either unfamiliar with sound propagation or wants to learn by seeing how sound moves instead of simply reading about it. Moreover, we don’t just give away knowledge without any context; we also show them real-life applications of the information they have just received. These applications can serve as motivation for future software development work.

End Product.

This app is meant for people in grade 7 or up. We also have some content for professional software developers. For students still completing their secondary education, this app can serve as a fun medium to learn about sound waves. We promise this is way better than reading about it in a textbook. For those already possessing this understanding, they can see what to do with this knowledge. We provide strong examples of real-life usage and explain how song detection, spam video detection, etc. work.

What is the fun and/or interactive aspect of your app? We have 1 of each. For the interactive element, we let users upload their own audio clip or select one of our 2 options and play around with the frequency and amplitude and see the effects. The fun element is when we allow the users to select a frequency range and see how sounds of similar frequencies can sound drastically different (courtesy of sound timbre).

Process – Thinking about the end product for 2 months; meeting deadlines; refining our software based on feedback and questions asked during demo presentations; teamwork and communication; coffee.

Results – A really cool web app.

Challenges – making sure anyone can use our app and not just someone with prior technical knowledge/skills; creating a cohesive story; tight deadlines.
